Use Cursor if you want the files, the chat, and the agent in one editor, including on a free plan. Use Claude Code if you already live in the terminal and you will pay for Claude. Claude Code is not on Claude's free plan. Cursor's free plan is $0, and its paid Plus plan does not include Claude models.

Honest pick for a beginner: Cursor. You can start for $0 and see the files. Move to Claude Code when the terminal is where you want the agent, and budget for Claude Pro.

Lovable versus Cursor, for people who do not have a repo yet, is on https://buildstackweekly.com/lovable-vs-cursor.

Prices checked October 15, 2026 on https://cursor.com/docs/account/pricing, https://cursor.com/pricing, and https://claude.com/pricing. Cursor's free request cap is not published, so it stays TBD. Claude's usage cap is not a fixed message count, so it stays TBD. The Max 20x plan is offered, and the page prices Max from $100 rather than listing a separate 20x dollar amount, so that split stays TBD.

## Comparison

### Cursor
Best for: Editor first, including a free plan
AI code editor. Agent and chat sit next to the files.
Site: https://cursor.com
- Free tier: $0. Agent and Chat are included with limited usage. Third-party models are not available. The pricing pages do not publish the request cap, so that number is TBD. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://cursor.com/pricing and https://cursor.com/docs/account/pricing.
- Paid: Plus is $8 a month, or $80 a year, and includes Cursor's own models only (Grok and Composer). Premium is $30 a month ($300 a year), Super is $100 a month ($1,000 a year), and Ultra is $200 a month ($2,000 a year). Teams is $30, $100, or $200 per seat a month. Third-party models, including Claude, start on Premium and are billed at API list price from prepaid credit. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://cursor.com/docs/account/pricing and https://cursor.com/pricing.
- Downside: Plus does not include Claude. You need Premium or above, and those models are an extra API charge. The free request cap is TBD.

### Claude Code
Best for: Terminal agent, on a paid Claude plan
Claude's coding agent in the terminal. It shares the same usage pool as Claude chat on your plan.
Site: https://claude.com/product/claude-code
- Free tier: Claude Free is $0, and Claude Code is not included. A published request cap for the free plan was not on the pricing page, so that number is TBD. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://claude.com/pricing.
- Paid: Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay $200 up front for the year. Claude Code is included and shares the plan's usage with chat. Max starts at $100 a month, with a choice of 5x or 20x more usage than Pro. The page does not list a separate price for the 20x option, so that price stays TBD. Max includes $100 to $200 a month in API credits. Team standard seats are $25 a month, or $20 if billed annually. Premium seats are $125 a month, or $100 if billed annually. Enterprise is $20 per seat a month, billed annually, with a 20 seat minimum, plus usage at API rates. There is no fixed message cap, so that number stays TBD. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://claude.com/pricing.
- Downside: You cannot start Claude Code on the free Claude plan. Usage is shared with chat, and the cap is not a published message count. Heavy use can push you to Max or to usage credits at API rates.

## Questions

### Which one should a beginner open first?

Cursor. The free plan exists, and you can see the files. Claude Code asks for a paid Claude plan before it is included. If you do not have a repo yet, start in Lovable and come back: https://buildstackweekly.com/lovable-vs-cursor.

### Can I use Claude inside Cursor?

Not on Free or Plus. Third-party models, including Claude, start on Premium at $30 a month, and they are billed at API list price from prepaid credit. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://cursor.com/docs/account/pricing.

### What does Claude Code cost?

It is not on the free plan. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month when you pay $200 for the year. Max starts at $100 a month. The 20x Max price is not listed separately, so it stays TBD. Team standard seats are $25 a month ($20 billed annually). Checked October 15, 2026 on https://claude.com/pricing.

### Do they replace each other?

No. Cursor is the editor. Claude Code is the terminal agent. A lot of people use the editor every day and add Claude Code later. The prices above are the ones checked. Anything missing stays TBD.
