# Lovable vs Cursor: which one should you start with?

Updated: October 15, 2026
Prices checked: October 15, 2026

It comes down to how much code you want to touch. Lovable builds the app from a prompt, including the database. Cursor is an AI code editor: you open a repo and you stay in the files. Start in Lovable when you want a working app and you do not have a codebase yet. Start in Cursor when you already have a repo, or you know you want to write the code. When the Lovable app is worth keeping, sync it to GitHub and open that repo in Cursor.

Honest pick: start in Lovable if you do not already have a repo. Move to Cursor when you want to live in the code. If you already have a repo, skip Lovable and open Cursor.

Claude Code is another way to work in that same repo from the terminal. This page is about Lovable and Cursor, so it does not price Claude Code. That price is TBD.

Prices checked October 15, 2026 on the official pages linked below. The free Cursor plan says usage is limited and does not publish the request cap, so that number is TBD. Included usage on paid Cursor plans is a weekly pool, described as a multiple of Plus, not a token count. That token count is TBD.

## Comparison

### Lovable
Best for: Start here if you do not want to touch the code yet
Chat-based app builder that handles the backend for you (database, auth, storage).
Site: https://lovable.dev
- Free tier: 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month, plus 20 Cloud credits a month and 4 AI credits a month. No custom domain. The Edit with Lovable badge stays. Editing the code in Lovable and downloading it need Pro. Git sync to GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket is included. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://lovable.dev/pricing and https://docs.lovable.dev/introduction/subscription-plans.
- Paid: Pro starts at $25 a month for 100 credits. Pro adds a custom domain, code editing, code download, and removing the Edit with Lovable badge. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://docs.lovable.dev/introduction/subscription-plans.
- Downside: 30 build credits a month on Free runs out in about 6 days if you use the daily 5. After the monthly cap, Free stops granting daily build credits until the next month.

### Cursor
Best for: Start here if you want to edit the code
AI code editor. You work in a repo, not in a hosted app builder.
Site: https://cursor.com
- Free tier: $0. Agent and Chat are included with limited usage. Third-party models are not available. The pricing pages do not publish the request cap, so that number is TBD. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://cursor.com/pricing and https://cursor.com/docs/account/pricing.
- Paid: Plus is $8 a month, or $80 a year, and includes Cursor's own models only (Grok and Composer). Premium is $30 a month ($300 a year), Super is $100 a month ($1,000 a year), and Ultra is $200 a month ($2,000 a year). Teams is $30, $100, or $200 per seat a month. Paid plans share one weekly usage pool with Grok. Claude, GPT, and other third-party models are not in that pool. On Premium and above they are billed at API list price from prepaid credit. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://cursor.com/docs/account/pricing and https://cursor.com/pricing.
- Downside: Plus does not include Claude, GPT, or other third-party models. Those start on Premium, and you pay API list price on top of the subscription. The free plan's request cap is not a published number.

## Who each tool is for

- **Lovable.** You want a working app, including saved emails, and you would rather chat than open a repo.
- **Cursor.** You already have a codebase, or you want to read and change the files yourself from the start.

## Honest downsides

- **Lovable.** 30 build credits a month on Free runs out in about 6 days if you use the daily 5. After the monthly cap, Free stops granting daily build credits until the next month.
- **Cursor.** Plus does not include Claude, GPT, or other third-party models. Those start on Premium, and you pay API list price on top of the subscription. The free plan's request cap is not a published number.

## Who it is not for

- **Lovable.** Not for you if you want to edit the source on day one without paying. Free can sync the project to GitHub, but editing and downloading the code inside Lovable need Pro.
- **Cursor.** Not for you if you want a hosted waitlist this weekend and you do not want to set up a database, hosting, and a repo.

## Questions

### Which one should I start with?

Lovable, if you are starting from a prompt and you do not already have a repo. Cursor, if the code is the part you want to touch. A one-page waitlist is faster in Lovable. A project you will keep editing belongs in Cursor.

### When do I move from Lovable to Cursor?

When the first version works and you want to live in the files. Lovable Free includes Git sync, so you can open the GitHub repo in Cursor. Editing and downloading the code inside Lovable itself need Pro, at $25 a month. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://docs.lovable.dev/introduction/subscription-plans.

### What does Cursor cost?

Free is $0 with limited Agent and Chat, and no published request cap (TBD). Plus is $8 a month for Cursor's own models only. Premium is $30 a month and is the first plan with third-party models, billed extra at API list price. Super is $100 a month. Ultra is $200 a month. Checked October 15, 2026 on https://cursor.com/docs/account/pricing.

### What about Claude Code?

Claude Code is a terminal tool for the same kind of move: stay in the repo and edit it with an agent. This page does not price it. That price is TBD.
