Lovable vs Cursor: which one should you start with?

It comes down to how much code you want to touch. Lovable builds the app from a prompt, including the database. Cursor is an AI code editor: you open a repo and you stay in the files. Start in Lovable when you want a working app and you do not have a codebase yet. Start in Cursor when you already have a repo, or you know you want to write the code. When the Lovable app is worth keeping, sync it to GitHub and open that repo in Cursor.

Honest pick: start in Lovable if you do not already have a repo. Move to Cursor when you want to live in the code. If you already have a repo, skip Lovable and open Cursor.

Claude Code is another way to work in that same repo from the terminal. This page is about Lovable and Cursor, so it does not price Claude Code. That price is TBD.

Prices checked October 15, 2026 on the official pages linked below. The free Cursor plan says usage is limited and does not publish the request cap, so that number is TBD. Included usage on paid Cursor plans is a weekly pool, described as a multiple of Plus, not a token count. That token count is TBD.

Who each tool is for

  • Lovable

You want a working app, including saved emails, and you would rather chat than open a repo.

  • Cursor

You already have a codebase, or you want to read and change the files yourself from the start.

Honest downsides

  • Lovable. 30 build credits a month on Free runs out in about 6 days if you use the daily 5. After the monthly cap, Free stops granting daily build credits until the next month.
  • Cursor. Plus does not include Claude, GPT, or other third-party models. Those start on Premium, and you pay API list price on top of the subscription. The free plan's request cap is not a published number.

Who it is not for

  • Lovable

Not for you if you want to edit the source on day one without paying. Free can sync the project to GitHub, but editing and downloading the code inside Lovable need Pro.

  • Cursor

Not for you if you want a hosted waitlist this weekend and you do not want to set up a database, hosting, and a repo.
